Coloring looks best even if one must cheat a little. The best result is not always the most accurate. Sometimes it's more important to draw volume and shape even if the object "should" logically be in total shadow. A focus on shields and the VF-0S

Actually the order is pencil, line, color then light & shadow.The only advice I can give is to build as many layers as you can to have more control. In my post I broke it down to just 4 layers for showing purpose. Oh that art was posted way back more a year ago here.
