The last great auk birds were killed on June 3, 1844.
Fishermen tracked the surviving ones to Iceland’s Eldey Island, strangling the adults and crushing the eggs.
It’s a sad reminder that humans can drive entire species to extinction without any thought.

Shark finning
This illustration is about the problem of animal cruelty. Fishermen catch sharks, cut off their fins and release them back into the ocean. Sharks can no longer swim and slowly sink to the bottom, dying a painful death. #savesharks #sharks

Fishermen catch sharks, cut off their fins and release them back into the ocean. Sharks can no longer swim and slowly sink to the bottom, dying a painful death. This problem is especially widespread in Southeast Asia and still occurs today. #sharkweek #sharks

In appearance the Philippine mermaid is pretty typical, but in terms of characteristics, they are very much like it’s namesake. They love to lure fishermen with their enchanting voice and then drag them into their deaths.

Selkies for #MerMay. Found all along the coasts, selkies love the company of seals. Mostly benign, they've been the fascination of fishermen and sailors for hundreds of years. #mermay2021 #mermaid #tabletopgames #DnD #art

An older piece for a previous MerMay, featuring Marine in something of a rare, serene moment! No doubt she's just recharging her batteries before she can go and bother some more fishermen. 🐬
I wanted imagine if sirens existed, the idea here is some fish evolved growing a female shape to lure and feed on fishermen and sailors, something that already exists in nature called "aggressive mimicry"
If you think this is crazy google "Persian spider tailed viper"
This item from our archive is an unused colour postcard decorated with a cartoon drawing of two fishermen, circa 1910.
The caption underneath reads “you’ll ruin all my Tackle, stand still my good fellow I’ll pull it out”.

Nazaré (Portugal) is famous for its seven skirts tradition. In the old days, women would wait on the beach for the safe return of the fishermen. To keep warm, they would wear several petticoats to protect their legs. Artwork by THU Knight and tribe member @JoaoLimaMoura
