In Turkey during the Ottoman Empire, tulips were used to decorate everything from tiles to royal armour. Unusual types were expensive and Sultan Selim II ordered prices to be fixed. He punished those caught overcharging severely - his Head Gardener was also chief executioner.
In 1811 the Ottoman Sultan Mahmoud II ordered Muhammad Ali Pasha (the supposed Wāli in Egypt) to redouble efforts to pacify Arabia, where in 1802 the House of Saud had gone on a conquering spree under Saud Al Kabeer Emir of Diriyah netting the holy city of Mecca as a prize.
On this day in 1911, an Italian pilot named Giulio Gavotti drops four grenades from an Etrich Taube monoplane onto Ottoman Turk positions in Libya. It's history's first air strike. No casualties are inflicted.
Ahmad Pasha al-Jazzar governor of Sidon and Damascus with his seat in Acre. He was the Ottoman official in charge when Bonaparte attacked the city. He was ably assisted by his powerful Vizier Haim Farhi (blue turban eyepatch) who was instrumental to the Ottoman defence.
