The french painter Paul Gauguin traveled to Tahiti and interacted with native people there who practiced traditions similar to Hawaiians. Funny enough, several Tahitians thought him to be a "Māhū" or something similar due to his flamboyant dress.

Yeah I mean I think it’s really just the male painters that make me eye twitch but I spent a lot of time pouring over people like Gauguin who had a series of weird/unsettling/voyeuristic paintings of Tahitian women that I think are beautiful and still think about often
