I never questioned why Wario got a plane as his first vehicle. A while ago though, it hit me that it was likely made to be a counterpart to Mario's Sky Pop, from Super Mario Land.
The Sky Pop even is in Mario & Wario's ending, so this was likely the idea.
I decided to watch the 1986 Super Mario Bros. anime for the first time last night, and it struck me just how Wario-like Luigi was in his relentless pursuit of gold. It makes me wonder how much this actually inspired Wario's character later on.
