I feel like the Sonic OVA has more visual flair. they were able do to more with it because they didn't have the time constraints of a weekly episode, as with Sonic X.

the Sonic OVA was wayyy more consistent as a result while Sonic X looked cheap at moments, and like this.

Sort of a nested avatar. The user has a mini body inside the main body. The actual bone structure is super distorted, so as to extend the reach outside the main body.
Using constraints, there's fake 'outer' arms that manipulate objects.
