In cottages the half door lets in light and keeps animals out. It also provides an arm rest if you want to watch the world go by or have a chat.
A man leaning on a half door was considered to be passing time but a man standing at the door is wasting time!

Paul Henry (1876-1958) West of Ireland Cottages (c.1926-30). Born in Belfast, Henry was the great artistic chronicler of the west of Ireland. Sometimes working off drawings it is difficult to date some of his work. Always unique, and instantly recognisable.
