I was inspired to get back to my warmup practice with the help of the current book I’m reading about EELS! They spend the first phase of their life as transparent larvae to make it harder for predators to see them in open water.
Online Open Meeting: 7pm Tuesday 22 Feb. ALL WELCOME. Guest Speaker, @greenleejw (John Wyatt Greenlee) with 'Eels of History', a light-hearted look at the medieval eel economy! Plus Society reports on the #RiverVer. Bring your questions! Details & to book https://t.co/1CTFvH3hTn
I get asked sometimes about how medieval people prepared and cooked eels. So...let's talk about.
That's right, folks...buckle up. It's a historic eel cooking thread! #CookingWithEels 1/13
Are you sitting around, waiting for your eel delivery? What if they never come?
It's happened before! In 1333, Lackenheath merchant Thomas Doune agreed to deliver 8,000 eels to a business partner.
When he didn't show w/ the fish, his partner had to sue him to get a £7 refund.
Did you know, that some people used to use eels as currency? Ridiculous. #YesYourGrace
Alright...now he's done! Sometime soon I'll get this guy up on the Surprise of Eels! store, so you can get him on t-shirts, coasters, and more.
Without a staff, you're just an aardvark in a bathrobe. But with a staff...
Wip of a redesigning your ocs, this guy reminded me of how scary moray eels are and I saw the frills and immediately thought of a lion fish so now we have some kind of moray eel lion fish dragon sea monster hybrid, these guys like to decorate themselves with bones.
A recommendation. The Rift (AKA Endless Descent) from 1990. A faux Alien / The Abyss knock-off that is literally crawling with all sorts of slimy underwater monsters, including brain-stabbing eels, body-horror sea weed that infects and eats people, and giant starfish beasts.
In 1792 William Windham gave a speech in to Parliament, arguing for an immediate end to slavery. He said anyone arguing that slaves could wait for their freedom were:
“like the person who, when charged with cruelty for skinning eels alive, answered, they were used to it." 5/9
Traditionally you're supposed to skin eels alive, but they object pretty strenuously. So you need to secure the head. Modern cookbooks still suggest you nail the head to a board.
This works if you're working with small numbers. But we're talking about a castle kitchen here. 5/7

In 1327 John de Moubray died & left behind an estate that included a ferry on the River Trent, 7 wind-mills, a rabbit warren, & annual land rents that included 2 gilded spurs, 9 barbed arrows, & 2,737 eels (10 binds & 9.5 sticks).
That's an eel every 3.2 hours, all year round!
