The fossilized skeletons of pterosaurs - which look quite different from any extant flying vertebrate - baffled many early palaeontologists. One early theory suggested that pterosaurs were flying marsupials.

@JoschuaKnuppe @DustinGrowick TRUE - the closely related Austroatlas lentus was estimated to have possibly reached up to 17 feet tall, although I believe this species is only known from a few fossilized leg bones and part of a sternum.
