So, Viking historic fiction and asparagus? Not so much.
And for some time European monks harvested the red berries ignoring the stem.
Only around the 16th century, medieval high society discovered its culinary qualities and served it as a delicacy within aristocratic circles.
Asparagus is in season at the moment. So in medieval historic fiction, can we use it as food?
First off, at all times asparagus was grown as medicine rather than food. Especially for problems with the stomach and bladder, or as a general aphrodisiac.

Flowers and asparagus, mysteriously combined in this lovely painting by my colleague Jan Fyt. Born on this day in 1611.
Many of Jan Fyt's paintings contain a large number of dead animals. Let's continue to keep it light here with "Vase of Flowers and Two Bunches of Asparagus" (1650). 💐🎨
@jdmccafferty Perhaps you saw the ep of Het Geheim van de Meester where they looked at one of Coorte’s other asparagus paintings (abridged here: https://t.co/OOzizWljuq)
Komenarudo (an agricultural mascot from Aizu, Japan) is an artistic rice fairy with a tomato beret, cucumber arms, and a shiitake mushroom mustache and mouth, who paints with an asparagus brush.

In fact, thanks to what is probably just a slip of the tongue, Paragus refers to berserk Broly as the “Legendary Saiyan” (no “Super”), an oddity Toyotaro reused for his description of berserk Kale, presumably in order to work around the U6 Saiyans not knowing of Super Saiyans.
this will always be sexier than the literal asparagus that she-hulk usually looks like https://t.co/aMD14CtykL
