I have put together some of my previous illustrations for today's theme on busy fish. We have the migratory salmonids, Jaw fish busy digging their nests, Malawi cichlids well known for mouth brooding and Agassiz's cichlid busy in parenting and baby care!!!

The adorably odd grunt sculpin (Rhamphocottus richardsonii) is named for Scottish naval surgeon and naturalist John Richardson who documented the natural history of the Canadian Arctic during voyages to find the Northwest Passage

Rocio octofasciata or Jack Dempseys, the first scientific illustration. Its common name refers to its aggressive nature and strong facial features, like Jack Dempsey, a famous Boxer. I took two months to finished it.

Love the mythic beasties & little weekend art time, so for “long fish” theme & ...taniwha, supernatural eel of Maori legend. Based on New Zealand’s freshwater longfin eel, taniwha, feared & revered, are monstrous, magical mysteries of the deep.

The week before I like to celebrate ! I’m starting it off strong with Marbled Electric Ray, Torpedo marmorata. This sweet flat sea baby creates electrical pulses for both predation and protection!

Up until today, I had no idea there were two oarfish species! Here's a giant oarfish for - the world's longest bony fish, capable of reaching 11m.

Though they may be short in stature compared to some others, here is a fish with a long lifespan. One orange roughy near Tasmania was aged at 250 years old.

Instead of a long fish, I drew the fish with the longest name: the lauwiliwilinukunukuʻoiʻoi!

Attempted to draw a dumbo octopus (yes that’s an actual species!) for ! Think I was thinking a little too much of the Disney character!

My pick for deep water fish is this smooth oreo dory (Pseudocyttus maculatus) who lives at depths between 400 - 1500 m

The quintessential deep-sea fish, the humpback anglerfish, is well-adapted for life at 2000 m below the ocean's surface - its "lure" (called an esca) is filled with bioluminescent bacteria that reel in prey in the cold darkness of the bathypelagic zone

The sea toad can be found in waters of 2000+ meters! These fish are a type of anglerfish and have a lure within a depression between the eyes. I think they’re cuter than the average anglerfish!

Julimes pupfish (Cyprinodon julimes), male specimen. Extinct in the wild now 😭
