I think araki might have been inspired by the fungus episode because Whitesnakes hallucination room plays out almost exactly the same like when Mulder & Scully were trapped.

Here's something I wish I was able to learn sooner; I think many starter anime-style artists begin by colouring shadows like on the left. Try change it up by starting with darker values and painting in direct lighting, and you'll find it becomes much simpler to render!
