A series can create an air of mystery without abysmal story writing. Shinsekai Yori is a positive example of a similar juxtaposition.

To me the biggest appeal is the writing. does a brilliant job building on the games and filling in the gaps for just how things went so wrong. It also provides a human side for both sides. Also, Lobo as a GL beating Atrocitus with a phallic construct.
