Once upon a time, a brave knight took it upon himself to slay a sinister dragon that had been harassing local peasants. The knight was offended, because harassing peasants was his job.

When Van Gogh was 27 & 28 he was a social realist. He was concerned with the lives and plight of peasants & orphans. He ministered to coal miners in Belgium and attempted to be a missionary to workers. He failed in this ambition but developed his vision as an artist.

The night after the Battle of a peasant and his wife were stripping the dead.
A bright light shone over a pile of corpses.
A man’s arm rose up, wearing a gold ring. “I am the King”
The peasants took him home.
Harold became a hermit at Canterbury.

This French cartoon (also ) shows Victoria meeting Louis Philippe after he had been deposed in 1848. She is shocked to see that he has been reduced to wearing a peasant's smock. In fact he lived quite comfortably in exile in Surrey.
