I think even in some concept art they had brighter colors before most got muted in the final stages of the film

Shockwave being a good example, his purple is way more muted in the film but the toys and promotional images you can better see his colors.

I'd be lying if I said it wasn't 70% or so pure instinct based on years of exposure.

I try to keep lighting to analogous or complementary colors.
For cloths I try to keep mostly muted silhouettes so I can emphasize the shapes I want ur focus on with brighter colors.

I created this beautiful, simple logo for a Jewellery business! She wanted to have a muted but luxurious colour palette, incorporating the earth symbol and the empress tarot card. This is what we went for!
