Perhaps the most remarkable extinction was that of the Passenger pigeon. This was once the most abundant bird in N. America, numbering >3 billion.
Here it's shown in Audubon's Birds of America. Martha, the last specimen, died in Cincinnati Zoo in 1914.

Tourmaline is a chemically complex group of silicate minerals. Mineral collectors appreciate the size & beauty of tourmaline crystals, making them some of the most hunted of the mineral world. The NYSM Mineral Collection has many important tourmaline specimens.
Day 7 of #Archive30 'Famous archives'
The dodo is an iconic specimen @morethanadodo, but it is believed that Lewis Carroll, author of 'Alice's Adventure's in Wonderland,' was actually inspired by Jan Savery's 1651 painting of the infamous extinct species displayed in the Museum
The Missing Link - newly discovered. An early specimen of the genus 'English Buck' in his natural habitat, upon a horse, in a #London park on 7th April 1798. Displaying characteristics of the 'man of feeling' & donning a primitive hat, he also has distinctly modern dandy traits.
Oh no! Upon my herbarium travels I’ve also found a plant specimen that was ‘damaged by enemy action at British Museum on 10 September 1940’ (at https://t.co/0CKTOoJHdo)
Made a lil size diagram for the 4 dinos (All specimens here used for scaling were found in Britain, and the largest specimens of each respective genus)
For this weeks #FridayFloraFauna here is a lovely sketch that was probably used for teaching purposes. It's based on specimens collected by Lyell & figured by Bunbury. Miller illustrated the published text....but these are very much #ArtistUnknown 🔍🎨🌿 #ExploreYourArchive
Today, we are introducing a mystery specimen... starting out with with something we hope you'll be able to get all the family involved with.
What is this?
#Zoologypoints #thingstodowithkids
We've also put all the specimens that inspired the
@adobestock collection into dataset @NHM_Data

Want to explore more? This specimen, # UF 155655, has been digitized for research and can be found on @MorphoSource for zooming and twirling in 3D space: https://t.co/cscBgxhhSu
🐍 Or you can download the 3D files of body and/or skull. Look at these teeth!
@Pellington21 I'm sure you can create a beautiful specimen for the rest of us to dream about....

What connects this plaster bust of James Edward Smith in @LinneanSociety collection and this specimen cabinet @V_and_A collection?
This is scaled to the largest known specimen of Deinonychus, MCZ 4371. It is not quite as large as a Jurassic Park raptor (partially thanks to proportion differences), but I have no doubt this thing could kill someone.
Quick reconstruction of the new dromaeosaurid Dineobellator notohesperus. I wouldn't be suprised if this ends up being a species of Acheroraptor (if not just a specimen of the type species).
For #FossilFriday I present you these incredible associated skull (PMU-M3836) & mandible (PMU-M3837) of Yoshi minor I had the chance to scan in @UU_University 🦁🇸🇪 This specimen of #sabertoothed #felid was found in late #Miocene deposits in #China and described by Zdansky in 1924
How does a #megacolon happen? This specimen is part of our online exhibition: https://t.co/0KH5ionmp6.
We hope you're #stayinghome and staying #disturbinglyinformed
