Sadly they are kinda... sidestepped in mainstream mecha scene compared to their humanoid brethren. Gundam didn't really like them. In both Patlabor and Front Mission, there are no friendly spider tank.

I really love 80’s/90’s Manga and Anime. The likes of Akira, Ghost in the shell, Patlabor and Spriggan, were a huge influence on my drawing, whilst growing up. Every time I watch them as an adult, I automatically want to draw something. <below artwork by me>

Not my favorite Mamoru Oshii work but - Patlabor: The Movie - is still worth watching for the animation and setting alone. They really don't make anime like this anymore isn't it? 80s and 90s look farther and farther away and it's a real pity...
