He was in his early 80s when he painted this: Frans Hals. Sooooo good! Just look at the freedom of the brushwork. Life is merely an illusion.

experimenting with 2D cell animation techniques that work with my loose brushwork style.

reminds me of back in the first year of film school doing hand made animations with a razor blade and bleach on 16mm film stock.

A panoramic view of Seyðisfjörður in Iceland. I found this in the public domain and went to work on it. There's some pointillism in there for color depth/texture. Plus loads of brushwork. Original 13x50 @ 300dpi.

my favorite painting warmup/exercise is "orb". Sometimes I remember to save them. I find it can be a fun way to experiment w brushes, brushwork, technique, color, etc. No pressure, no stakes. Just having fun making an Orb.

Leyster's work can be distinguished from that of Hals through her generally more discordant handling of colour, her sketchier treatment of hands, the wryly distorted smiles of her figures and her altogether flightier brushwork.

Experimenting with new styles and techniques is essential for growth as a digital artist. So, I took a break from heavy brushwork and textured art style for a bit, and experimented with digital pen and ink.

The more I paint, the more I fall in love with the simple beauty of visible brushstrokes. In watercolour, the translucence of the medium makes it even more enticing. You can often see the brushwork through the coloured veil of a second layer of paint.
