Cranky (who was then known by his real name, “Donkey Kong” or “Donkey Kong Sr.”) would’ve been captured by Jumpman and trained as a circus animal. He escaped but was recaptured, then DK Jr. found a way to free him. They would both go back home to the Jungle Kingdom after that.

With the logic that the Mushroom Kingdom is a separate dimension from Brooklyn in the movie, much like how it is in Super Show, that could mean Cranky discovered Brooklyn when the modern Donkey Kong / DK Jr. was a just child.

Plus, Donkey Kong and Mario are near enough the same age, which was confirmed from Yoshi’s Island DS. It wouldn’t make sense for Cranky to be young the first time he meets Mario and then older by their second encounter in the Jungle Kingdom.
