Not sure why I'd never seen this before, what a great little cop thriller. An intriguing mystery, good handling of the grit, grime and strange/sordid types of the backstreets of 70's L.A. Matthau was a master of deadpan wit and cynicism, makes for skilfull absurdist levity.

And this point is NUANCED! A character can have ups and downs in a single episode.
I think the cynicism works best when you give a downer character a moment of joy and hope and they get to have it, and enjoy it.
They know the world is bleak, give them something nice for once.

Finished The Powerpuff Girls Movie:

Cynicism and jokes aside, it's a shame this movie flopped. Even on its own, it's not a bad movie. Funny, action-packed, and a decent origin story for the girls.
