Morland was the great chronicler of rural life in the 18th century. Unfortunately he was also his own worst enemy, and drink, debauchery and a spell in debtor's prison did for him in the end. Many of his paintings were engraved.
Died #OnThisDay 24Apr1731 #DanielDefoe was an English trader, writer, journalist, and spy most famous for his novel "#RobinsonCrusoe." He was also often in debtors' prison and the cause of his death was labelled lethargy but he probably had a stroke.

Rackets is believed to have been invented in the 18th-century debtors' prisons. It is mentioned in the Pickwick Papers, in which Mr Pickwick watches it being played in the Fleet debtors' prison.
