Like Gainsborough, Sargent was a superb portraitist & indeed like the English painter he was not keen on painting heads. Gainsborough liked painting kids & beautiful women & Sargent was of the same mind. Sargent was so sought after that he chose who to paint, however!

At only 13, he worked as an assistant to French artist Hubert Gravelot in London. In 1768, he became a member of the Royal Academy.

On this day 1643. Lord Willoughby of Parnham captured royalist Gainsborough, as well as the Earl of Kingston & 250 royalists.
Kingston's house holds out until the next day & upon its surrender 'a great store of treasure' was taken. But within weeks, the royalists retook the town.
