Sometimes positively connotated, other times identified with witches, the MEIGAS are well known characters in Galician lore. The word "meiga" may come from Latin MEDICA (since they are women who know the secrets of healing) or perhaps from MAGICA (magic woman).

In some Galician folktales, a man must bring 3 loaves to a well to disenchant 3 maidens. But his wife starts one of the loaves, so when the man goes to the well, the maidens appear on the back of 3 horses... but 1 of them is lame and the spell cannot be broken 🤷🏼‍♂️

The Torre da Moa (#Galicia) is the scene of many legends. According to 1 of them, in this place were the Celts ("1 of the 14 races before the current Galicians"), and then the XIGANTA MEOTA came. She was "a giant woman with the appearance of a man who ruled men".

They are not the only creatures with these characteristics in Galician folklore. The OLLÁPAROS lived in inland mountains. They were ravenous, man-eating giants with one eye on the face and the other on the back of the neck.

On the Galician atlantic coast, sailors feared the ALARBIOS. They are horrible cyclops who travel by boat and capture the shipwrecked sailors to take them to their island. Once there, they feed them and, when the time comes, they devour them.

Lavandeiras are beings from Galician Folklore, which also appear in the North of Portugal. They ask for help to twist their towels stained with blood, if help is denied, for fear or lack of solidarity, the outcome could be death. Seeing them isn't a good omen...
