Tortoises are briefly discussed by Thomas de Cantimprato in De natura rerum libri XX. Turtles are painted in both of our manuscripts, ie XIV A 15 from end of 14th century and X A 4 from first quarter of 15th century. Both turtles look a bit like monsters.
