I highly recommend watching the 2009 anime Shin Mazinger Z: Impact (or "Mazinger Edition Z: The Impact"), as well as Mazinkaiser from 2001.

Some of the good starting points would be OVAs like Gundam 8th MS Team, Gunbuster, Mazinkaiser and the Getter Robo OVAs which are short but very enjoyable.

Other good recommendations are series like Big O, GaoGaiGar, SSSS.Gridman, Dynazenon, Gurren Lagann & Code Geass.
