Galatea

No existing ancient text names her. Her name comes from Jean-Jacques Rousseau’s 1762 poem ‘Pygmalion’.

There are two Galateas in myth. The other Galatea is a sea-nymph whose lover is killed by a jealous cyclops & she saves him by turning him into a river spirit.

Diarmuid has his own version of the Loathly Lady myth. In a twist from the usual, Diarmuid is able to find her after he breaks his oath AND cures her from her illness, at the cost of no longer loving her. She returns him home, with his beloved greyhound.
