Overpainting (for me at least) is just going over the rough brushstrokes of the "base layer" to make them smoother and tightening things up.

lineart and I have a weird love-hate relationship

left is my usual style; no lines, just clean overpainting (i "paint" lineart on the same layer as colors)

right is proper lineart + flats + shading; it's not a workflow I do often but it IS one of the few times i ADORE lining

Overpainting with binary (pixel) brushes is SO fun… Gotta figure out how to get comfortable in CSP or procreate bcu color jitter pixel paintings sounds fun to get into.

They are definitely overpainting I think but you can tell the difference between older works and newer ones here
The older piece has sharper lines on the face and not as high contrast on the clothing. No doubt this artist is skilled, but there’s def something off.
