About a year ago, there was a "match 3 to win" Plants vs. Zombies game titled "Zombie Match". It was an early access game available on iOS and Android. A notable piece about the game is that it wasn't developed by PopCap. Notice the almost PvZ3 artstyle.

The design for PvZ2's 8-Bit Zombie originally used the same sprite work from PvZ's DS version. However, due to Nintendo's strict policies, PopCap were not allowed to use the sprite as it was an original Nintendo design and therefore could not be used on other platforms.
