Last two days to see exhibition 'Black in Rembrandt’s Time' @Rembrandthuis Amsterdam till 6 September 2020. Here 1) engraving by Cornelis van Dalen II after Govert Flinck and 3) Hedy Tjin's 'Ilona'
He loved Rembrandt & studied his beef pictures. These are paintings of animal flesh. Soutine took Rembrandt’s idea & liberated the concept further. In painting flesh he asks what is life. Mutton (c1920), Portrait of a Young Girl (c1920), Self-Portrait (c1920-1) & the Beef (c1920)
When he painted he saw sitters as themselves & peeled away his own preconceptions of them. He was following the path of Rembrandt’s. Village Idiot, Woman in Green, Woman Seated in an Armchair & Woman with a Tall Hat (all c1919)
The first 10 years of Rembrandt’s activity are the focus of the exhibition ‘Young Rembrandt’ @AshmoleanMuseum Oxford. Through a selection of paintings and works on paper, the show charts the artist's evolution in those seminal years. Below, ‘Nude Woman Seated’ c.1631

He charged his students hefty fees and made money from their works. Arnold Houbraken, biographer of Dutch Golden Age painters, wrote that he was so greedy, Rembrandt’s students painted gold and silver coins on the floor to see him try to pick them up…
Adam Elsheimer’s Flight into Egypt (1609), painted just a few months before his premature death, was the first naturalistic depiction of the night sky in Renaissance art, & influenced Rembrandt’s own Flight into Egypt (at R), done 30 years later
Greatly enjoyed Rembrandt’s Light @DulwichGallery (be quick, closes Sunday). Rembrandt is known for his mastery of light and shade, but DPG’s show creates an immersive experience in which even familiar faces shine anew. He is a magician, we fall under his spell.
Lots of #exhibitions end this week. Saw #LucianFreud's #selfportraits at @royalacademy. Not my fave painter but I do find this double portrait v moving (Two Irishmen in W11, 1984-5) The older man’s hands remind me of #Rembrandt’s Portrait of Margaretha de Geer at @NationalGallery
Reinterpreting Rembrandt’s noisy brushwork seems the perfect launch pad for a large impasto painting. Looking forward to more adventures in the studio in 2020.

This is the moment when the resurrected Jesus reveals his identity to astonished followers ~ contrast Rembrandt’s atmospheric, almost cinematic Supper at Emmaus (1628) ■ Caravaggio’s more theatrical version (1601) ■ & forger van Meegeren’s fake Vermeer (1937)
December 2 we will host a one-day international symposium focusing on Rembrandt’s painting The Conspiracy of the Batavians under Claudius Civilis. Tickets and programme: https://t.co/Xz1u3tdgUE
The Old Woman in his picture is often called Rembrandt’s mother as she appears in his & his students’ work. Young Scholar & his Tutor (c1630), Old Woman Reading (1630-2) & The Extraction of the Tooth (1630-5)
It’s back to work today but we’re here to cheer you up with our quirky #ArtoftheDay featuring an 🐘 - Duncan Grant’s colourful “Elephant Bearing Flowers” - fun fact: the elephant is taken from Rembrandt’s c1637 drawing “An Asian Elephant” 🖼
Today at 4pm, Eric Jan Sluijter will explore Rembrandt’s rivalry with his predecessor Rubens. Join us for an exploration of art and competition in the Dutch golden age! https://t.co/MxCqGJtLhX
Why would someone attack art? Compelled by above? Sticking it to a community? Case study: #Rembrandt’s “The Night Watch,” attacked with a knife by an unemployed teacher in 1975; in 1990, sprayed with acid by an escaped psychiatric patient. Poor thing just can't catch a break.
So many fab #PortraitChallenge interpretations of Rembrandt’s self portrait @britishmuseum. Do have a browse of all of them over at @StudioTeaBreak!🙂👍 These by @marshallcartoon @Cyntefin @mark_s_burgess @junerobin
