Painting at Bedtime.
Noli Me Tangere.
Rembrandt.

According to the Bible the first person the resurrected Jesus spoke to was Mary Magdalene. He said 'Noli me Tangere' ('Do not touch me', or possibly 'Do not cling to me'). Thus Mary was the first witness to the resurrection.

This is one of my favourite little paintings by Rembrandt. Jeremiah (1630) is lamenting the destruction of Jerusalem. The feeling of sadness & loss is palpable. The miller’s son really understood & translated emotion. Viewed in the museum, the sadness is devastating.

Painting at Bedtime.
Storm on the Sea of Galilee.
Rembrandt.

This is Rembrandt's only seascape, and shows Christ calming the storm on the Sea of Galilee, as described in the Gospel of Mark. The painting was stolen from a gallery in Boston in 1990 and has yet to be recovered.

2/2 Rembrandt. Loved his mother. Apparently also beloved by Sebastian Stosskopf, and it's his day today.

Last day of my own little art week. Finishing it off with one of mg favorite illustrations -- green gouache created a really nice patina effect for the Rodin.

Also a portrait inspired by Rembrandt.

7/ Joshua Reynolds (1723 -1792). It's easy to forget how deeply Reynolds admired Rembrandt. And how frequently he measured himself against him! Reynolds must be the most prolific British self-portraitist. He painted himself at every step of the journey through life.

Ecce Homo by Daumier and Rembrandt. The former's more than three times the size of the latter.

When he painted he saw sitters as themselves & peeled away his own preconceptions of them. He was following the path of Rembrandt. Village Idiot, Woman in Green, Woman Seated in an Armchair & Woman with a Tall Hat (all c1919)
