People forget how bleak and brutal the 1st Doctor era is tbh. There are a lot of stories where situations tend to be really intense, gritty and hopeless (the Savages' life being drained to sustain The Elders, The Massacre as a whole, etc). Definitely one of the most dour DW eras.

Personally, I've been really enjoying styles like these (Dominik Mayer, Eli Minaya, Anato Finnstark, and others) gritty, textured, with a ton of subtle details and mastery of color.
