The Elves and the Shoemaker has to be one of the kindest fairy tales; a story of good turns and gratitude.
In the Ladybird version, artist #RobertLumley sets it at Christmas
Not so many people seem to remember this tale - but it was definitely one of the scariest:

Oddly, in the 1960s/70s there were 2 well-known Ladybird brands, completely unrelated: one made kids’ clothing (stocked by Woolworths) & one published books.
Artist #RobertLumley worked for both. In this poster for the clothing brand you can see echoes of his fairytales
The Elves and the Shoemaker is surely the kindest of all the fairy tales - a story of giving and gratitude, with no villains

Details, part 2.
#RobertLumley often put little creatures in the background of his fairytale illustrations. Children were always very quick to spot these little scene-stealers
