Thomas McKellar (c1916-24) & Model (nd). The latter three drawings are of d’Inverno (c1904) & show Sargent’s superbly sensuous & powerful nudes. Each work would have taken a couple of hours & were done in a period of great artistic virility.

A century ago being gay could lead to imprisonment & hard labour so Sargent’s work in revealing a hidden gay world is revolutionary. Nicola Reading (c1904-7) is an image of his lover & Bather, Florida (1917) was painted on an estate there owned by a gay couple.

Here is one of Sargent’s paintings of Gondoliers (about whom he was besotted). Also shown is his fascination with sleepers. Gondolier (1905), Siesta (1905) & Peter Harrison Asleep (c1905)

A fascinating body of work within his oeuvre are his studies of sleepers. Here we have people at their most vulnerable, clearly trusting the painter & comfortably asleep. One wonders what was Sargent’s fascination due to? I don’t think it was about sensuality.

These depictions of Venice demonstrate the different styles of Manet’s realism, Monet’s more dreamlike visions and Sargent’s immediacy

Artists and writers flocked to Mary Hunter. She owned works by Claude Monet as well as several of John Singer Sargent’s Venetian watercolors. This portrait by Sargent has an experimental quality: Hunter’s features emerge from an atmospheric background. https://t.co/tG5ipO5E4i

Inktober Day 24. This started as a portrait of another Toby after John Singer Sargent’s ”Dr. Pozzi at Home.” But then the dressing gown started looking like shiny pleather. So I started messing with the colors and soon Toby ended up with a dye job. Sorry, Toby!

Incomplete clothing study of John Singer Sargent’s “Winifred, Duchess of Portland” (totally blaming this on the motion sickness trains have been giving me lately)
Also, I gotta definitely study more of Sargent’s work!

One of the key men in Sargent’s life was Thomas E McKeller. He was a bellhop in Boston when the artist found him. Sargent was one of the first to have a male muse. McKeller’s torso & face regularly appears in his work. McKeller (1917), frescoes & studies.

Finished up my masters study of Sargent’s “Bedouin Women Carrying Water”. It was quite a challenge. 😬
