The Greatest Austrian Field Commander of the Napoleonic & Revolutionary Wars, Archduke Charles, Duke of Teschen, who defeated Jourdan and Moreau during the former, repulsed Napoleon at Aspern in 1809 only to be defeated at Wagram the same year.
#OnThisDay 1809 the start of the Battle of Wagram between Napoleon I and Archduke Charles of Austria-Teschen and the 5th coalition. In 1810 Joseph Chabord portrayed the emperor in the posture of the statue of Marcus Aurelius on a light gray horse dominating the Wagram plateau.

Marshal André Massena, Prince of Essling, Duke of Rivoli died #OTD in 1817. A formidable soldier for much of the revolution and empire, defeating Korsakov at Zurich in 1799 and playing a major role at Wagram.
