#FossilFriday Introducing Guemesia ochoai, the first definitive abelisaurid theropod from Northwestern Argentina

Dino Fact!
Kryptops (Covered Face) is an abelisaurid from Early Cretaceous Africa! Its skull had traces of blood vessels on it, implying something was attached to its face, likely a covering of keratin, a material found in other structures in animals like horns!

Dino Fact!
Pycnonemosaurus (Dense Forest Lizard) is an abelisaurid from Late Cretaceous Brazil! Estimated at over 30 ft long, it might be the largest abelisaur we know of! Its fossils were found near some sauropod fossils too, meaning it might've hunted them!
Art by Phloxatrox!
The neotype, USNM 4734, has a fragmentary skull which underwent distortion. This lead to it being reconstructed with a very short snout that looks like an Allosaurid cosplaying as an Abelisaurid. This weirdness is what influenced the short snouted Allosaurus in WWD
Dino Fact:
Rugops (Wrinkle Face) is an Abelisaurid from Late Cretaceous Africa! It was named this after the grooves left on its skull by large blood vessels. Its skull also had 2 rows of 7 holes, which might've been there for a crest or horns to attach to.
Art: daitengu
Dino Fact:
Aucasaurus (Auca Lizard) is an Abelisaurid from Late Cretaceous Argentina! The only skeleton found had a badly damaged skull, which was likely how it died. It's believed either it was bitten by another Aucasaurus or a Saltasaurus fell on it.
Art: Hoatziraptor
A closer, better quality view of the head. I always imagine the heads of abelisaurids as being boldly patterned (for display purposes).
Incidentally, this is South America's fourth new abelisaurid since the start of 2020: the others are Niebla, Spectrovenator (shown here; from Zaher et al. 2020) & Tralkasaurus. #theropods #dinosaurs
Pretty exciting to see the new #abelisaurid #Llukalkan aliocranianus from the Santonian of Neuquén, #Argentina, just published in Journal of Vertebrate Paleontology by Federico Gianechini et al. Known from great remains! Cont... #dinosaurs
Another beautiful #theropod from Argentina! Welcome #Llukalkan: "A New #Furileusaurian #Abelisaurid from La

Abelisaurid goombas.
These small predators live all across Yoshi's Island, hunting in small flocks.
They developed a powerful teeth, using it in their powerful bite and as a sexual display.
Dino of the day!
Majungasaurus is a genus of abelisaurid that lived in what is now Madagascar from 70 to 66 million years ago at the end of the Cretaceous.

New work! An abelisaurid Spectrovenator ragei from early Cretaceous of Brazil. Amazing fossil and interesting dinosaur. Colored with watercolors, I really like the result! 😃
