He's a royal messenger for a kingdom that's rather deep in the forest! He specializes in emergency and secretive scrolls that travel between the kingdoms. The crest is actually the cutie mark of the alicorn prince he serves :D it's a badge that goes on his bag strap

Probably where they got the idea for sunny now that I think about it. We kinda see the inventor thing in one of sunny's designs before giving izzy the crafter/inventor trait. Which also explains the whole alicorn thing and how that was probably gonna play out with Twilight
