Here's a couple by Giuseppe Arcimboldo (16th century). Probably the first surrealist before that was even a thing. Vertumnus & Four Seasons In One Head. He did a whole series of these.

Arcimboldo's paintings are bafflingly brilliant, and as captivating (& hilarious) now as they were nearly 500 years ago.

And there are many more than I have shared here!

I think his work is an important reminder that our ancestors were no less inventive or playful than we are.

But Arcimboldo became popular for his satirical portraits in which he constructed human faces from objects.

The general consensus is that these were made as a form of frivolous entertainment for the Imperial Court.
