Arnold Böcklin’s ‘In the Sea’ is my favorite to see, idk there’s something about it. I just like mermaid mythology and the ocean so I’m absolutely smitten with it every time I go.

Here’s a 1630 canvas attributed to Francisco de Herrera the elder. Not great - but not ridiculous. But back to Böcklin. It’s interesting that, before the turn of the 20th Century, he had a towering reputation. He was part of modern art’s avant-garde. Then: he was kitsch.
