What's cool about the Pacific Rim Kaiju is that even if they weren't built bioweapons, you could still find enough, more subtle signs of common characteristics to imply a biodiversity of creatures on the level of beetles. Like those flat plates at the back of their skull.

Probably won't add this to my RealDex seeing as Kakuna is based on bee or wasp pupae, though it may be worth noting that beta Weedle's line was based on beetles.
