This watercolour sketch from 1913 of a man ploughing autumn fields by George Clausen was painted at a time of great unrest in the countryside. Labouring families had been drifting to the burgeoning industrial centres for several generations and the crisis of WW1 was a year away.

Sir George Clausen.
Clausen was an artist who was extremely popular in his day. Over a long life (1852 - 1944), he produced a large number of well-received works, in which the most important element was light. He was also a WW1 war artist.

'No. 2 "The Reconstruction of Belgium"' ~ George Clausen (1917).
Here he depicts Belgium rising from the ashes, where ruins are being restored and new structures are being built. On a scaffold is a sculptor with hammer and chisel modelling a monument to Belgium’s strength.
‘We plough the seeds & scatter’, is one of the most performed hymns in the UK, written by German poet Claudius.
John Betjeman parodied it as "We spray the fields & scatter the poison on the land" in protest against modern farming methods. #FolkloreThursday
