I think a lot of modern art is less evocative and and hinders the imagination. My eternal example is the Ghoul illustration. On the left is the ghoul from the 5E DnD monster manual. The right is the ghoul from Old School Essentials.

I think the reason this design is so fantastic is it's character design boiled down to its bare essentials. She's two shapes and a big sword with zero elaborate details, which makes her infinitely drawable but also retains an insane amount of personality
