You can adjust the tag set for your character. AI is not always going to get things correct. Her hair length and bangs are certainly always in flux. But you can use Undesired Content to block things that start to appear throughout multiple gens. It's a bit finicky sometimes.

overall the game's very, very good, it feels really distinct even compared to other Mario RPGs

I do think some things could have been better, and the platforming is indeed really finicky, but battles and exploration are fun and the difficulty curve is nicely balanced
