I feel like I am fighting a losing battle, but I will defend the existence of #wasps any time I get a chance! #Hymenoptera #WaspsAreFriendsToo #entomology
As today is #DarwinDay2020, here are some lovely insects collected by the man himself on the Voyage of the Beagle. Most of Darwin's specimens at @DublinDeadZoo are of Hymenoptera and Diptera from Brazil, which made their way to Ireland when sent to A. H. Haliday from Co. Down.
Your #WednesdayWasp is Megarhyssa macrurus, an amazingly large #wasp in the family #Ichneumonidae. The females use their remarkable ovipositor to drill into wood and deposit eggs in horntail #sawfly larvae. Not to worry, they don't sting! #wasp #insect #Hymenoptera #bugs #scicomm

Photographing live insects can be difficult. They walk around and fly. But sometimes you are pleasantly surprised when the insect strikes a fun pose. You can capture the natural behavior that is lost when you photograph pinned specimens. Like wasp bath time. #Hymenoptera
Look at this super cool wasp I found while sorting through pan traps from last november. Mymarommatoidea maybe? #entomology #Hymenoptera

What did one bee say to the other when they landed on the same flower?
Buzz off.
I'll quit pollen your leg now and wish everyone a happy #WorldBeeDay, particularly the entomologists I share an office with!🐝

#insectoftheday no. 88. Hymenoptera again but no apologies: outrageous ovipositors, of Zaglyptogastra (top) and Labena (below), both ichneumonoid wasps. Different ways of accessing concealed hosts, threading and drilling. On gallery @NHM_London tonight, with @eden2020eu.
#insectoftheday no.39. Sticking with Hymenoptera, here's the first ant of this series: Paraponera clavata, the Bullet Ant. Infamous as its venom is at the top end of the Schmidt index of sting pain. https://t.co/cGovlUQrHu
#insectoftheday no.27. Trichoptera and Hymenoptera! Look out for caddis cases in rivers with long silk ribbons protruding. The ichneumonid wasp Agriotypus armatus over-winters in the cocoon of its host caddis, in this case (pun intended...), Odontocerum albicorne.
