1/2 J is for Joy William (1803-1865) & John (1805-1859) Joy , brothers born in Southtown, Gt Yarmouth. Prominent maritime artists from the Norwich School of Painters.Captain George Manby, the barrack master, commissioned them to paint harrowing scenes of vessels in distress.
Our final #MuseumWeek #HeroesMW for today are anybody involved in rescue at sea. In the early 19th c, George Manby invented the 'Manby Mortar' making rescuing distressed ships easier and thus saving countless lives.
