The use of sea #kelp in #obstetrics and #gynecology was popularised in the mid 1800s. Inserted into the #cervix, a rod of dried #Laminaria will slowly absorb moisture, causing dilation. Corn stalks, sea-sponge and various plant roots have also been used as uterine tents...OUCH!
