More fish from the old PhD lab group: et al. say 'ello to Ellopetalichthys, a middle Devonian petalichthyid placoderm from the Canadian Arctic.

SHARK WEEK FACTS- Monday
Dunkeleosteus terrelli

-Large placoderm (armored) fish

-Lived through the Late Devonian period

-Uses it sharp skull to chop and chomp food. That's very metal.

-Very bad at kissing

-Some media depictions have a xenomorph tongue for some reason.

I think she might be a placoderm. But then again, if current cladistics are to be believed, aren't we all? (Side note: Let me know if you guys would wanna see a full skeletal diagram. Her ribs are just derived gill arches.)

Large filter feeding fishies were at in the Paleaozoic too! Toothless placoderm Titanichthys was likely hoovering up plankton in the Devonian. Well done PhD student on publishing his master's research. Open Science https://t.co/K5pIDcQFRf

“Gardenhead and Jointed Neck”.
Heterosteus asmussi, a 6 meter long freshwater placoderm fish from the Devonian. It may have been an ambush predator, spending most of its time close to the sediment.

I really liked painting this one.

Speculative parasitism in prehistory:
- Parasitic radiodontids
- Parasitic trilobites
- Cleaning symbiosis in placoderms
- Condonts infected with tapeworm larvae

PLACODERMS ARE BETTER THAN YOU
here is why..

In humans if our spine fuses its hella pathological, and can be completely debilitating

In their back bones fuse as part of their physiology.

Its just a part of growing up dunk.

Yeah the gnathal plates in placoderms are derived from teeth that grow outwards in in a ring instead of in rows
They also have the same structure as their scales proving that teeth evolved from scales

Misremembered the theme as Picasso instead of Placoderm🙊 A few modifications and here is a Plicassoderm

He goes by Placo, a little on the nose since he was made by accident when I tried to draw a placodermi. Outward personality is predominately inspired by Cayde6, but deep down he's pretty reserved, some might say he's actually shy ʅ(´◔౪◔)ʃ
Just don't call him Pleco

285. Titanichthys agassizi. Un placodermo (pez acorazado) del Devónico Superior. El escudo craneal medía unos 60 cm, y su tamaño debió ser similar al de Dunkleosteus sp. (aunque menos robusto). Podría ser el primer vertebrado filtrador conocido. (©M. Witton)

Lunaspis, Austroptyctodus, Diplognathus and Keresdrakon (to pacify ).

Here are both two of my first - and one of my last pieces, all featuring the Devonian placoderm and apex predator Dunkleosteus terrelli.
The first 2 donein 2015 for https://t.co/d23noXI8Qf
The latter done a few weeks ago for another client.

Incidentally, cleaner wrasse was my inspiration for this speculative zoology piece on "Cleaner Placoderms" https://t.co/OcIS9SYZJV about how some ecological interactions we see today might have also existed in the ancient past

For here's a throwback of Lunaspis, the Devonian placoderm whose name appropriately means 🌙🛡️ (weird to remember the entire 1st half of 2018 for me was drawing the Paleozoic with colored pencils in a sketchbook)

Highlights from the Bothriolepis aquarium, Emausaurus, Creatosaurus, Kaikeifilu.
