American artist Howard Pyle was born #OTD in 1853. His style would influence other illustrators, including NC Wyeth. He was even admired by Vincent van Gogh, who wrote in a letter to his brother Theo that Pyle's work "struck me dumb with admiration."
These four illustrations (all by Katharine Pyle) are from Charlemagne and His Knights (1932), Mother's Nursery Rhymes (1918) for both Goldilocks and Beauty & The Beast, and Tales from Norse Mythology (1930).
