The idea behind it is that Mario got himself trapped into a world that itself is EXE-like. The world is using and twisting assets from SMB1.

Real talk, I did this version with the palette for SMB1/3 Fire Luigi from Mario Maker 2, and I actually really like it, but I didn't want to just yank the colors from somewhere else (even though there was a period last year where I used those same values for their hair lol)

Ehh, I think what OP was trying to say is not that NES isn't capable of good graphic but more of how most mockup brushes off the period devs didn't know how to optimize their graphic. Hence the SMB1 palette. SMB3 had pretty decent looking sprites too but was not the point.

Sprited Lucas (Big and Small) next! Even put the sprites next to the MX Sprite I made.

He mostly resembles the SMB1 Mario Sprite. Except his Big Form's head is thinner by a little bit.

Made a Bowser sprite a few weeks ago. Mostly SMB1 styled, but with his more modern appearance.

The back spikes were a pain to get right, but I managed. So enjoy this. I'm gonna be posting more art soon!
