Goku had that for a while as a revolving door with no finite rival till Vegeta. Yamcha had the opportunity as a rival/recurring antagonist. Then it became the following: Krillin, Tien, Yajirobe, Piccolo Jr & finally Vegeta.

One thing that I think would have made the granola saga more interesting, is if Granola himself was actually a Tuffle, instead of a new species.

Like his people were a group of survivors who survived the initial war on planet Vegeta.
