Croak! The old man of the pond is only seen at night, but Bilibin managed to capture a Vodyanoy one evening in his skazka style. His toadness is blamed for drownings if no corpse is found. Appease - tobacco/salt. Marriage photo by Soviet child Victor Korolkov

Vodník is the Czech/Slovak version of vodyanoy, a male water spirit. Vodník looks like a human, wears clothes, and can survive outside water with his clothes wet. He tricks and drowns people, then he keeps their souls in teacups underwater.

The Slavic believed that the Vodyanoy was born from the spirit of an unbaptised man who committed suicide, and thusis terrified of holy waters. As a result, people believed they could protect themselves from his evil ways by blessing any watering holes.

Going through a list of Mizuki's "yokai of the world" illustrations and I'm really happy to see homages to two art pieces I love to bits - Topsell's manticore and Bilibin's vodyanoy!

Russians call him vodyanoy (водяно́й). To the Czechs he is Vodník. To the Germans Nix or Wassermann.

He's often described as an old man with greenish hair and covered in algae, and sometimes black scales.

Vodenjak = water spirit and the Lord of water, resides in his crystal palace at the bottom of a river or stream. Male, with shapeshifting abilities which he uses to lure victims. Found in folklore of most Slavic nations (Vodnik/Vodyanoy). Image: Ivan Bilibin

Spirits live everywhere: homes and every place outside of the home have or had its guardian spirit: springs, old trees, fields, vineyards, boundary lines, and so forth. Deadliest of all was the water spirit, the Vodyanoy.

Crap, almost forgot to post this!
Mermaid I worked on all may for mermay... with a little vodník (vodyanoy). He's probably something like second cousin's wife's nephew, came to visit the ocean for his summer holidays and she ended up babysitting him.

Vodnik, the slimy! Engage this vodyanoy in conversation, he's more talkative compared to his neighbors in the swamp.
